Yamaha John Patitucci TRB Signature Bass Guitar - Amber

Artwork you can play
I've owned my Yamaha JP2 for more than a year and this is, hands down, a fantastic instrument. The workmanship is superb and the tone is as even and balanced as any bass I've played. The range of tones available is tremendous and they are all usable. For a 6 string bass, this is the best value in this price range. If you want better, prepare to spend $6k and up on a Ken Smith, Fodera, etc. It is the prettiest thing I own!
The only potential negative has to do with the sheer size of the instrument. If your hands are of medium size, the neck may be too big for you. The wide string spacing and 35" scale work for some people but it's not for everyone. In addition, at 11 lbs it's not exactly light. Within two months of ownership I switched to Gotoh GB-350 lightweight tuners and reduced the weight by nearly 1/4 lbs. While the balance wasn't bad before, the lighter weight tuners improved it; in my opinion, it's how it should have been equipped.

Worth the wait
I started playing bass in 1992 and graduated into 5 and 6 string basses several years later. In 2001, I acquired a new BB East, Series I bass. 18 years, 26 states, and 1,200+ shows later and I’ve only had to install batteries and strings. I purchased the JP2 as it was made in the same shop using the same incredible attention to detail as my BB East.
On to the review.
Playability: The 19 mm bridge spacing is wider than most 6s which are 18 mm so that takes a little getting used to. The 40” radius fingerboard is nearly flat which makes all the width easy to manage. The 26 frets, while unique, reduces the room for popping a bit. The lower cutaway, while excellent compared to many basses, only really makes 24 frets very accessible unless you angle the neck up quite a bit or bring your thumb from behind the neck. The smooth neck finish makes it easy it scamper up and down the neck.
Construction: This bass is perfection. Not a blemish anywhere, fretwork is flawless, the finish is rich and beautiful, the inlays are truly art. The balance is good though I wish the strap horn was an inch longer.
Tone: This is the part that really matters and this bass delivers. The wood, scale length, and pickup engineering is such that this bass sounds great with flat EQ and just panning the pickups a bit. I use the EQ a bit though but I miss the mid range three position rotary switch of the Series I basses. A rotary switch in addition to a conventional mid boost/cut would have been nice.
Bottom line. I think this could be the best sounding 6 string bass Yamaha has ever made. I’d compare this to basses in the $5k range so that this bass is available for less than $3k new shipped is an excellent value. It’s not just great for $3k though, it’s great period.
