Good quality - electrically
The quality of the circuit is good and the 2x and 5x multipliers are very useful. From an electrical standpoint 5/5. However, the switch mount is terrible. The switches are too large to fit past the bezel of the bird. One of the switches can, but the red one is too large. This makes the mounting nut barely fit onto the end. Also the holes needed to be drilled out larger and the mounting cap needed to be filed. If possible a smaller red switch should be sourced and the 3D printed mounting cap should be altered.

The best chinese transmitter you can buy
3 of 3 found this helpful If you're looking for the best sounding, highest power, and cheapest Chinese transmitter you can buy, this is it. It has built in SWR protection and is capable of up to 45W. You don't need an SWR meter (although it's nice). The sound quality of this transmitter is also very good because it doesn't use the low quality BH1415F. Instead, this device uses the KT0803L. Not sure what the pre-emphasis is, however, the sound is comparable to a professional station when received with US receivers (just a little quieter, but not really noticeable). To get more power output at higher frequencies, the two turn coil can be spread. I originally got 40W output at 13.8V, but was able to get 45W after bending the coil.
They are definitely lying on most of the specs though.
Here are the more realistic specs (I am an RF engineer by the way):
Signal to noise: 66dB
Harmonic distortion: 0.3%
Stereo separation: 40dB
Harmonics: -50dBc
Spurious: -30dBc
The only real (but large) downside of this transmitter is the in-band spurious signals of about -30dBc max. That is quite a lot for a transmitter of this power level and this means it certainly does not meet FCC or OFCOM requirements. So if you're putting out 40W, it means you have 40mW of garbage at the worst point and it tapers off slowly with a span of a few MHz on either side of the carrier. Because of this, other stations may be blocked within about a 1/4 mile range of the transmitter (worst case), so keep that in mind.
I was able to achieve about a 10 mile range with a fair amount of static and a solid 6 miles with no static. This is in a rural mountainous location. It may go farther without mountains. This is with a 30ft antenna height and LMR400 cable. Don't use the cheap RG cables, you loose up to 50% of your power.
Still, overall, it's a very good value for the price.

Better this time
