Wonderfully realised period production
Jeremy Barlow and company deliver a more-than-satisfying period-style recreation of John Gay’s groundbreaking satirical musical play ‘The Beggar’s Opera’ (1728). The leads acquit themselves well in dialoge and song, and the arrangements are brisk and free of overdone orchestration. While the 1955 EMI recording is still great fun with its Old Vic energy, this 1991 version is refreshingly respectful of Pepusch’s original arrangements.
