The definitive work on a late-recognised genius
You will find lots of books on the old blues masters, but if you want the full story of Blind Willie McTell, this is the only one to get. Author Michael Gray takes over 350 pages to fill out the history of the man who wrote Statesborough Blues, Dying Crapshooeter's Blues and many others on his trusty 12-string guitar.
Gray fills out the book with much detail on McTell's ancestry, the US Civil War, slavery and the Civil Rights movement. There is plenty of context here! If you just want a brief history of BWM you can probably find it in a CD booklet. This book is the proverbial journey starting with his great grandparents and following it through to the one-hour recording session with Ed Rhodes in 1956 and his eventual death.
If you're from the Twitter generation, skip this. But if you remember books (like the Internet, but made of trees), then this is a rewarding read on a worthy subject.

Top Vox effects pedal with a real valve!
For guitarists who don't want to go the pedal board route, this is a good alternative. Containing all the effects you'll need, they can be mixed together to form preset patches. The unit comes with some already entered, and you can make up your own too. It comes in a robust metal casing so will withstand so,e knocks, too.
However, if you are looking at this kind of pedal, I would recommend considering the Zoom G1Xon too. That does a similar job and comes with rhythms and a 30-second looper.

One of John Fahey's best recordings
Marvellous recording of the late great John Fahey and his unique Primitive American guitar style. Having researched the old blues masters he took their work to the next level adding his own style to what he learnt. Stomping Tonight On the Pennsylvania/Alabama Border (which doesn't actually exist) starts as a traditional blues and then takes off in other directions. On The Beach At Waikiki is a 12-string slide guitar tune which could have come from Blind Willie McTell. And John can throw out a beautifully syncopated instrumental in the style of Blind Blake with Take A Look At That Baby.
This CD contains both the early original recording and the later version of the album, so two for the price of one. Great music, excellent value.
