Outstanding Fidelity for a small speaker!
These are baby brothers of the KEF LS50, a $1500 pair that have been ranked as some of the best speakers at any price by many in the Audio press, including product of the Year by Stereophile magazine. I've listened to both, but far enough away in time that I can't compare them in detail, but I know that much if not all of the LS50 magic is in these babies! Plus they have built in high quality DAC and amps, to make them a phenominal bargain in the audio world. I bought these on ebay used, and hadn't really planned on buying the wireless version which is about $200 more list price, but I'm glad I did. While I wouldn't call them easily portable speakers, as they are pretty heavy, I've taken them to a mountain cabin and they are pretty convenient, as you only need a longish extension cord and your iphone or whatever for a source, and you've got a real hifi system anywhere you've got wifi. Of course you can go wired if you don't have wifi. They are designed for nearfield listening, as they are officially PC speakers, when you use them in a normal room for listening I find they benefit from a bit of a bass eq boost, even with the ports open and the switch set to "stand" mode, which reduces baffle step compensation contouring, effectively increasing bass. Full disclosure, I like full, rich bass, so my preferences may be more than normal. Of course they do have to obey the laws of physics, they only have 5.25" bass drivers, so can only move so much air to generate bass notes, so you can't go super loud in large spaces. Even in a room, I prefer to listen nearfield, my speakers are setup about 6' apart, and I move my chair up between and about 3-4' in front of them. Of course they are fine for casual listening anywhere in the room, while they sound good, no chills are sent up your spine like you get when seated properly in front of them for serious listening. The imaging and clearly infinitesimally low distortion is truly amazing. I'm pretty sensitive to distortion, it manifests as uncomfortable for me when listening for any significant time. All in all an OUTSTANDING product at full list price, and even better if you get them on sale or discounted on ebay!
