'Prodigal Soldiers': Flawed But Useful
Although widely praised, this 1995 study of the U.S. Army's transition from Vietnam to the Gulf War suffers from numerous imbalances, such as too much attention to one family (McCaffrey) instead of focusing on more important issues. Lots of errors on Army unit designations, spelling of names, etc. The concept is laudable (looking at the Army's transition from the viewpoints of about a dozen generals and admirals) but the execution is flawed. Linking the Army leadership of the 1975-1999 time frame to the prodigal son of the New Testament parable, as the title attempts to do, is way off the mark. Again, this book, despite its many shortcomings, has been highly praised by military and civilian experts, so it'll have to do until a better balanced study comes along.
