An Intriguing Portrait Of Hitler and Nazi Germany
Ian Kershaw is one of the premier scholars on Nazi Germany, as well as of Hitler and the effect his rule had on 1930s and 1940s Germans. One of the most intriguing aspects of Kershaw's scholarship here is his assessment of Hitler/Fuhrer-ism as a kind of quasi-religion for WWII Germans. While intriguing, his scholarship can be faulted in the manner of all academic writings, i.e., his work here emphasizes less the complexity of German psychology during this time and more the use of his research to formulate a specific argument. Still, it portrays Nazi Germany in a way all those interested in this phase of 20th century history will find invaluable.

Simplicity at its Best
Poetry chapbooks are an art form in themselves, and Pinsky has assembled here some rather simple but effective work. It's easy to take potshots at poetry, even by the masters, and there are things here I wish Pinsky had reconsidered. Still it's effective, concise, and thematically coherent. Only the great ones dare to do this!

Taking Their Measure
If you've never heard America's songs, this collection is a good place to start. It begins with some of their most enduring hits from the early albums, and follows with songs from a much later era, some not even written by the group. What's missing are the better songs from their middle era, when their popularity first began to decline. Still, this collection takes the measure of this seventies group, which is known for its capable songwriting and excellent three-part harmonies.
