Best option to upgrade from 12V to 18V Power wheel kids cars.
I decided to upgrade my Grandson Power Wheels Dune Racer. We upgraded the Power System with 3 Power Sonic Model PS-6100 F1 6Volt6 12.0 Amp. Hr. Sealed rechargeable batteries. I placed them 1 in the front and 2 at the actual housing of 12V battery in the rear. So both motors are feed by 18 Volts 12.0 AH system instead of 12 Volts 9.0 AH OEM Systems. The reason we avoided 24 Volts was because we did an Upgrade “To Go” not an upgrade “For Show”. It is fun to drive fast and end with Destroyed Gear Boxes and Burned out motors. Even with 18 Volts Batteries we added 4
Alloy Motor Heat sinks to cool down motors.
Going through this upgrade it is a good idea to keep 12V system on the side and add this brand new 18 V system, so we decided not to salvage 12 V system, so we added a new Connector with in line 40A fuse. After a long search we concluded that “Wire Harness Connector for Fisher-Price® Power Wheels® 12-Volt SLA Battery” is the best Option. You buy it Plug it in, and Play.
While arranging the new system it is a Piece of Cake, charging 3 batteries system is the trick. Upgrading with 3 batteries keep in mind that all 3 batteries must be Equal, otherwise the weakest battery overheats and deteriorate fast. So you have to charge and EQUALIZE all 3 batteries same time. To do it the batteries has to be charged at the same voltage
For the front battery I used an Adapter Output: 8V-10V = 2A-4A with in tandem a Full Function 15A Adjustable DC to DC Step Down Voltage Buck Converter Module on sale for $10. I added a simple circuit with a relay that stay NO, and closed while is voltage in input and close the circuit in output. This protects the battery from discharging. The charging voltage was set up at 6.9V. While there it is enough room in the front there isn’t much space on rear. So I was very lucky to find 7V 2A adapter to finish the Power Wheels Dune Racer upgrade. This type of adapter provide 7.4V with the terminals open (0A) and 7.3 V under 300mA load.
These batteries requires DC Power, constant Voltage Charge.
Cycle Use: 7.20 – 7.50 V @ 68F
Standby Use: 6.75 – 6.90 V @ 68 F
Actually the front battery is charged at 6.9 Volts with regulated power supply and 2 other batteries are charged with 2 adaptors 7V 2 A.
So far so good, but just in case we bought 5pcs Re DC-DC 3A Buck Converter Adjustable Step-Down Power Supply Module LM2596S for total $7.98 free shipping and will set the charging Voltage @ 6.90 Volts each using 8 V adapters in the future.
The upgrade is done, the Power Wheels Dune Racer drives a little faster and more agrressively but we still check now and then the motors. The good is that the kids can drive for longer time and the speed is kept same level until the low battery cut of system, disconnect the power, and the vehicle goes back to the charge.

The best way to charge properly BL-5C li-ion 3.7 V Batteries.
I ordered this charger because the radio was not equipped with the charging Status Light. This charger can be powered by 120V AC outlet, or by a 5V Dc adaptor via Male - Male USB cable plugged to the USB port. This solved the problem using the charger in my car. The charging status light Red In Charge and Blue Fully Charged, indicating the charging status, solved my problem. This can make a full 4.2 V charge without overcharging, increasing the performance of BL-5C Li-ion 3.7 V batteries. Thank You
