Paughco Universal Chrome Chain Guard for Harley Motorcycle Chopper Bobber
    Apr 22, 2021
    Paughco Universal Chainguard
I purchased this chainguard to replace the missing guard on my 1980 FLH. The Paughco guard is much too long for a chain driven Harley with a stock wheelbase. I needed to remove the forward 8" to fit my bike and did so carefully with a fine tooth bandsaw. While I expected the chrome to be disturbed in the immediate cutting area, I wasn't expecting the degree of chrome peeling that occurred. The chrome lifted right off and in large strips! These are triple chrome plated but the chrome is very poorly bonded to the nickel beneath it. An email with photos to Paughco got me nowhere, and now I'm out $75 on a guard I wouldn't put on a lawnmower. Very disappointing.
    1973 - 1984 Harley Rear Fender FL V-Twin 50-0884 - with Hinged Tail

V-twin 50-0884 Reproduction FLH Rear Hinged Fender
I bought this fender to replace the bent & damaged OEM one piece rear fender on my stock 1980 FLH after giving up on trying to find an OEM hinged rear fender that hadn't already been thoroughly abused. I am happy to report that according to my digital caliper, the gauge of the V-twin fender is comparable to three other OEM Harley rear fenders I own which include an original post '72 hinged fender and two 1979-1984 one piece rear fenders. I mocked up the new fender to my bike and found all of the strut mount holes line up with no particular stress or manipulation. The hinged portion of the fender does excessively overlap the main portion of the fender however and needs to be trimmed on each side for a nice factory style fit. The ridge that runs along the sides of these fenders generally have crisp lines however my copy has noticeably faint edges transitioning from defined edges along one side. The signal light bar holes are prepunched on this model and are punched approximately 3/16"-1/4" too wide requiring work to fit the bar, and possible welding to disguise the edge of the holes once the dimensions are corrected. Welded strut mounting nuts do not have the reinforcing plates the originals do, though I'm not sure how significant this is. Otherwise overall construction is ok with reasonably well placed spotwelds. Overall, these fenders are decent, and a good alternative to battered originals. It would be nice if the boys in Taiwan were inclined to take just a few more minutes to make them right. They're close, but could be just a little better.
