The rest of the story...
I'm also reading a history of Scotland, with a focus on the emigration to the USA. I had done some cursory research into that side of my heritage but quickly realized that all i got was a popularized gloss. It also focused on the Highlands, but mentioning that most of the early migrants were Lowland, Border Scots. Fascinating but a bit of a slog.
Steel Helmets is no less detailed or information-packed but much better as a bedtime read. Told with the affection of a born Borderer.
Suddenly, references to events and terms, dropped in passing in other books (reference and historical novels) were explained or delivered in context.
The history of the Border Rievers is fascinating. Understanding them makes a lot of Scottish & British history make much more sense.
I recommend this book to anyone curious about Scottish history, who wants to get to the juicy stuff that's always along the bone.

Lived up to expectations
I got this flask for use with a period persona. The only caveat is obvious; it's possible to dislodge the cork if you aren't careful.
I plan to make a leather carry case, with a strap to secure the cork.

A quality, low aroma wax for an old badger
A life-long asthmatic, w/ graying, stiffening whiskers, I need a persistent wax but a scentless one. Any hint of perfume is enough to affect my breathing. This Badger has only the faint aroma pf the waxes themselves and provides the subtle training I require.
Kudos. I's now my daily wax.
