Great little machine that can be expanded hugely.
1 of 1 found this helpful A fairly basic laptop now, but bang for buck a good general purpose machine and one suiting student needs extremely well. Highly mobile, yet powerful enough to still play games like World of Warcraft, this machine - at $99 - is a bargain. The ability of Dell machines all to use docking stations or port replicators make the brand and series very well suited to todays users. By putting even a 500Mb SD card in the built in slot and then using that exclusively for caching really made a difference - as would extra RAM or a SSD.

It just makes sense to replace with new
1. cheaper than re-grinding old rotors, with none of the hassle
2. very easy to replace
3. comes pre cross-hatched for superior braking
4. no rust/muck to clean off - just make sure you spray with brakeclean to remove preservatives before fitting new pads

A very impressive bit of gear - if you love Windows 8. Samsung recommends Win 8 on this hardware, yet only provides driver downloads for Windows XP from their website - and the manual only downloads just so far then crashes. Win 7 seems to get no attention at all - apart from a warning on their FAQ to the effect that the BIOS should be upgraded so all devices get recognised properly. No mention of the particular BIOS version number required.I would recommend upgrading the memory to the full complement of 8Gb - Windows is a memory hog no matter which version, and laptop memory is cheap. 5400rpm is just too slow these days, and a SSD or hybrid drive will boost the HDD performance tremendously. Still, a more than adequate general purpose performer and - for the money I paid - a bargain. I also love that this machine comes with a numeric keypad...something laptops/net/notebooks have traditionally lacked and users sorely miss. So, great hardware really let down only by the O/S and limited online support.
Mine came without a restore CD/DVD (something I hope to rectify through the supplier) and with my limited experience with Win 8 I have no idea how to create a restore CD/DVD. Without having to option to restore to factory Win 8 I am not going to tinker with Win 7....BIOS upgrades are traditionally filled with danger of the machine not booting properly afterwards - and the only way to fix a bad BIOS upgrade is to send it in to Samsung - a potentially very expensive process. I'm not really interested in going back to XP either. Ad the non-existent Win 7 online support, and I'm gonna wait for the outcome of a call to Samsung support before I do anything.
