Is there a chance that I was "Duped"? I think it's quite possible!
3 of 5 found this helpful I purchased the lens believing that it was fast focusing and that it was equipped with the nearly silent, "Ring type" USM adjustment;("Can only be heard by dogs and bats") according to the reviews. The lens that I have in my possesion though, is neither fast focusing nor quiet in it's operation. In addition, there is absolutely no indication that the "Image Stabilizer" is functional. The lens is particularly noisy and slow focusing. A total disappointment!
The particular lens was supposedly a "Kit Lens" that was included with a Canon 7D. The seller claims that It was never attached to a camera and for all intents and purposes, was brand new. It came securely wrapped and packaged so I don't suspect that it has suffered any damage.
I sent an eMail to Canon's Tech support and also had a phone conversation with a member of their Tech support staff, and was assured that Canon only offered one iteration of the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens, and that it was indeed equipped with the "Ring type" USM.
I can only conclude that I either have a "Knock-off" of this Canon lens from Taiwan, or that the particular lens that I purchased is equipped with Canon's "Micro" or " Mini Micro" Ultra Sonic Motor". That would explain the slow focus and the noise, but still doesn't address the inoperative "Image Stabilizer"
So far, I haven't been able to put much emphasis on Image Quality. The slow focusing and noise are too much of a distraction. (I'm using the lens with a Canon 60D by the way).
There are lots of misconceptions about this lens and others. Most who claim to be professional or semi-professional are clearly without a clue. Some of the more common mis-beliefs are; it's a "fast lens" and suitable for use in sports and action photography; The USM lenses use a red ring around the lens barrel and are the professional lenses, whereas the consumer grade lenses are marked with a gold ring around the barrel; only the "L" series lenses are equipped with the "Ring type" USM adjustment; there are only two types; the "Ring type" and the "Micro Motor" type; all consumer and cheaper grades use the "Micro Motor" adjustment.
These are just a portion of the things that I've read in the lens reviews, and are pointed out as a positive means of identifying the particular lenses offered by Canon. One of the more astounding comments was from one who referred to "aperatures of f/2.8 or less", as MINIMUM aperatures. I attempted to learn as much as I could before purchasing it, but obviously something escaped me. I hope to find someone else using this lens so that I can make a direct comparison. I'm not yet ready to make a recommendation.
