A spectacular sounding tube sdc with interchangeable capsules.
I have become a convert to Avantone mics quite recently. Their build and their sound are fantastic and their prices are right in line with modern recording budgets: very modest.
The CV-28 fills an interesting void: a small diaphram front-address tube condenser. It is lighter and easier to position than an LDC and its suspension basket holds the mic securely at any angle you want. ITs light weight means there is no tipping when using lighter mic stands. Although I haven't really explored them much yet, it also comes with omni and hypercardioid capsules as well as standard cardioid, which is another special feature. The hypercardioid capsule, for example, could make stage use more feasible. I will note that on my particular mic the hypercardioid capsule has poor threading and is hard to screw on - this is my only negative about the construction. I may have Avantone send me a replacement capsule.
The sound - beautiful and clear, very modern and detailed - the opposite of vintage or vibey. What you hear in the cans sounds just like what you would eq another mic to try and sound like.
On vocals it is a marvel for male voices that need definition but no extra girth. On acoustic guitar it is my favorite mic ever, and I have owned many Neumanns and AKGs before. It has plenty of low end but it is not unnaturally huge. I think a pair of these would be excellent piano mics and excellent for classical work also.
I heartily recommend the CV-28 and Avantone mics in general.

Perfect phones amp for studios
I have several of these on mics stands in my studio that can be quickly moved next to wherever player sit or stand and they work great. Plenty loud enough for drummers to hear the click. I appreciate the "switch in the power cord" the latest model has, so the unit is not always "on".

Not as good as brass bridge pins, for much less money.
1 of 1 found this helpful I really wanted to love these. I'm all for tonal tweaks to my many acoustics and, although the price of these is outrageous, gave them a try. I installed them in my Taylor 815 and took out the brass bridge pins I have on most of my other guitars.
To my surprise, after reading the reviews, my acoustic volume and brightness had diminished. The sound waseven and usable, certainly far from bad, but a step back from what I had before, and certainly not worth what they cost. They do look cool, and putting new strings ON is very easy. But taking them OFF is not nearly as easy as popping out your bridge pins and lifting all six strings out of the hole. I had to fuss with each string to get it to release from the Power Pins.
Then there is the break angle. The Power Pins only work if the break angle after the saddle is fairly steep. If your saddle is low the break angle is weak and the tone is mushy.
My final take. Spend $20 on a set of solid brass pins. They will never need replacing. The tone will be everything you want from these power pins.
