A beautifully written book which brings the multi cultural Ottoman Empire to life

A book that gets to the heart of life in the Ottoman Empire. Full of surprises about how decisions were made, the influence of multi-ethnic advisors, artists, craftsmen, historians and architects in its enduring success, and a practice of religious tolerance, well in advance of its day. Having said all this, this is a warts-and-all book which does not shy away from addressing big historical issues, and related current ones head-on.
