Suitable only for life in a display case
This is a very solid, beautifully painted and detailed model. It is best suited, however, for life in a display case rather than actual running because it is incapable of staying on the track even at low speeds. In this respect it is my third expensive lemon, along with a couple of BLI steam locos which can stay on the track but cannot run (PRR T1: defective chuff actuator x2; N&W J: split drive gear).
In this case, BLI's version of the GG1 does not pull as well as my 40-year-old Rivarossi GG1, which does not start slipping with a 4-car passenger train on a slight gradient; has always stayed on the track even after having wheel flanges reduced to RP-25; and cost a lot less. The Rivarossi engineering of the outer trucks is simple and robust, preventing them from lifting off the rails when encountering a curve, unlike this half-baked BLI model.
