The Moving Target by Ross MacDonald
This is an excellent book in the traditional "hard-boiled"-style detective novel. The main character is tough-guy P.I. Lew Archer and he is at his cynical, tell-it-like-it-is, in-your-face best. The storyline is typical MacDonald: a rich patriarch disappears and his not-so-distraught wife hires Archer to find him. But it's not the storyline that makes this book great, it's the character of Lew Archer, the roving conscience, who sees everything just as it is and never hesitates to let you know what he thinks. In this book, Archer delivers some real classic lines and his descriptions are wild, vivid, and right on target. If you're a fan of MacDonald, you won't be at all disappointed. If you're new to his works, prepare to be knocked out! I would say this novel ranks right up there with some of his best. It was originally published in 1949, so it's one of his earlier works. It reminded me of three of my favorite MacDonald novels and compares favorably to them: Find a Victim, The Drowning Pool, and The Ivory Grin. If you've never read a Lew Archer novel by MacDonald, this is a good one to start off with. It's got a lot of humor, fast-paced action, and will keep you interested the whole way. I loved it!
