Incorrectly assembled.
I bought two of these several months ago and just now tried to use one. It did not work. After investigating I found it was incorrectly assembled. The sprockets which create the ratchet were backwards. I took it apart by disposing of the bent wire clips, turned the sprockets around the other way, and reassembled with new cotter pins. Now it works.

Encyclopedia of Furniture Making (Technique of Furniture Making) by Ernest Joyce
I owned a book by Joyce, updated by Peters called " Encyclopedia of Furniture Making." It's interesting so I bought this book to add to it. Turns out it's the exact same book, but with a different title. I guess one was published in the US and one in the UK. Buy whichever on is cheapest. Don't buy both.
