This largely untold story uncovers how university teams were augmented and military bases used football as a tool in the training and preparation of young men for combat on the battlegrounds of the Second World War. He details the makeup of the service teams, often comprised of former collegiate gridiron stars, gives us insight into what life was like on base, and fills us in on hard-fought games between these Naval training posts and against major university squads. If you have ever wondered what in the world Bainbridge NTS, Iowa Navy Pre-Flight and Randolph Field were doing in the Associated Press college football polls of the early 1940's, then this is certainly the book for you!
