Pair with HP SAS Expander and cost per port ~ $4.50
2 of 2 found this helpful Simply update to latest firmware. Old firmware isn't compatible in many use cases. Get an sff-8088 to sff-8088 cable and plug directly into the external port of the HP SAS expander (yes it works and works perfectly). ignore all the statements about the external port being dedicated for tape drives. Simply add sff-8087 to SATA FORWARD cables (for direct connection from SAS expander to SATA hard drives) or sff-8087 to sff-8087 cables if connecting to a sata backplane.
Boom! $4.50/sata port.
Not Ideal if using solid state drives. Each SATA port will be 3Gb/s and NO spinning drive exceeds this. Maybe hitting 150-180MB/s, well below the 300MBps that SATA II is capable of. NOTE: big "B" Mega Bytes.
