Brutality and the power of love
As a student of WWII and of aviation, this is an valuable insight into the Japanese side of the war. Pilot Sakai conveys the brutal training and resulting mindset of his corps and the military in general. I read this in 1985, and the part that stayed with me was his vision of the young woman who loved him playing Beethoven, as he struggled to return to base half blinded and concussed from a long distance mission. I bought this copy for a nephew about to go into Army pilot training; after giving it another read myself.
