Good performer for a general P&S camera
My girlfriend having an old Fuji A350, she was constantly annoyed by the tiny dim screen on the camera. I have been a fan of Casio Exilim cameras ever since I bought my EX-S770 slim camera, so I decided I can get her a Casio Exilim too and when I bought the EX-Z1000 I was a bit disappointed at first because of the size. It was huge compared to the S770 but it was fair. The functionality does indeed live up to the Exilim brand. Also, the EX-Z1000 accepts SDHC cards, my 8GB card didn't have any problem at all. The pictures are sharp and detailed, very little barrel distortion and the huge screen is a bliss to use, be it in the dark or bright daylight, it adjusts the brightness automatically. However, the camera is a bit slow to lock focus in dim light and also it's anti-shake system is done in the DSP (software), but it manages to take off some blur. Pictures taken in dim lighting are a bit grainy and lack definition. As for the video recording, it lacks a dedicated record button as seen on the S770. You have to select video recording from the BestShot menu, which is quite frankly a bit annoying. On a 8GB card, on high quality settings, you can easily record 4 hours and 46 minutes of video. However, you are limited to a maximum file size of 4GB, which means you can record up to 2 hours and 23 minutes of video at one go. Overall, I think it's a good performer. The metal casing of the camera does a good job at protecting the camera but be careful not to bump the camera as dents show up quite easily. Very good camera for most people who are not too demanding but want good pictures.
