A timeless masterpiece.
The game is a classic and for good reason. It slipped me by back in the day and for many of us living in Europe as it never got released here. But the ds version is thought to be the definitive version, adding the animated cutscenes of the ps1 version and many other improvements and game extras (battle arena etc). If your a jrpg fan, or classic pixel art fan, you owe it to yourself to own this game. It's made by three of the greats of Japanese art (game design, art, and music). A true masterpiece that holds up now as it did back then.
