Quality product
Horses are well made and durable. There are many details, such as hair in the manes. They stand square without tipping over. They are a semi rigid plastic which basically makes them unbreakable. Children could safely play with them.

Entertaining but not a great literary work
I was struck by the flawed physical attributes of many of the characters: stuttering brother, hare-lipped sister, blind family friend, and wondered if all of these (except for the brother) really contributed to the plot. Initially, I found the relentless descriptive similes actually corny and repetitive. Fortunately, these began to disappear as the story progressed. The author repeatedly interjects details which are supposed to reinforce the time period, but they seem not to ring true. (I'm sure I did not, in the '60s, serve Kool-Aid at almost every meal.)
That being said, it was an interesting read and was generally quite well-written.
