Chasing the White Dog
The book promised a look inside American moonshining, but didn't really deliver on the promise. It was interesting, but tended to wander among a number of themes, from the history of white liquor during the colonial and post-Revolution periods to moonshining in modern-day Appalachia to hobby distillers to microdistilleries back to enforcing the laws against moonshining in North Carolina. As a result, the book gave broad coverage, but generally not much depth. Am I glad that I read it? Yes. But I'm also putting it back up for sale. It didn't earn a permanent place in my library.

Dragon Bone Hill
A new book on an old topic--Peking Man, and by extension the existence of Homo erectus in east Asia. The authors managed to provide a complete, detailed exposition of both the "Dragon Bone Hill" fossil excavation and the history of said site, along with a review of the knowledge gleaned from that site and an application of that knowledge to current scientific thought on Homo erectus in the region, without either resorting to unnecessary jargon or "dumbing-down" the material. The authors' theories are presented as well, and clearly labelled as the authors' views rather than being presented as accepted fact. I consider the work a worthwhile purchase for those interested in human evolution and the natural history of the ice age.

Nose-to-tail fish cookery, but the focus is on non-US species
The book is just what it sounds ike, a guide to "nose-to-tail" fish cookery. The one problem, for those in the United States, is that the book addresses many fish not found in our waters. However, the techniques descriped still apply, and can be easily adapted to local species.
