Strawberry Girl 60th Anniversary Edition (Trophy Newbery) Lenski, Lois Paperbac

    Strawberry Girl by Lois Lenski
There are many Lois Lenski books I've enjoyed reading as a kid in the 1950s, later to my children, and now to my grandchildren... but this may be my favorite. This author always wrote stories for children about particular regions or times in America with a mission similar to that of Michener's books for adults. Though I'm happy that this story deals with some of the history of my adopted state, Florida, "Strawberry Girl" would be my favorite anyway because in its themes it respects and trusts the intelligence of the juvenile reader in ways few of Miss Lenski's comtemporaries ever did. The story poses real, sometimes startling issues of responsibility with adult tensions and dangers that the family of our protagonist has to negotiate. I wish I had more than just 2 thumbs to point up.

Wonderful sweet illustrations from Ann Schweninger. I loved reading this book to my children and now, 2 or 3 decades later, enjoy even more reading it to THEIR children.
