Great gadget at a great price

The gen2 echo is a stylish looking quality speaker producing solid sound, with the same Alexa functions as any other newer model. The only feature missing from this generation is the smart home hub (aka Zigbee support) which became available in newer models. This is not a problem if you don't require smart controls or already own another hub. Nowadays, used (or nearly new) gen2's can be found used at very low prices and present excellent value for money, especially as they're arguably better looking than the gen4 ball design.

Essential travel item or where broadband is unavailable.

Great piece of kit! I used a Three unlimited data SIM and it worked straight out of the box to keep all the family's devices connected while on holiday in the UK and abroad. Would also be a fantastic 'internet in a box' solution where broadband is unavailable or not worth subscribing all year round. You might need to update the APN settings, but that will depend on the SIM card / mobile operator. Uses the tpMiFi app or browser interface to configure, but the default settings are spot on.
