Will not grip my hair

It does not grip my hair at all... cannot get it to hold the hair to create a curl/wave. Yes, I use styling products in my hair. My hair is just above shoulder length - not sure if it is too long or too short for this brush. Maybe the teeth are too far apart? The video I saw on Instagram made this look like a fool-proof wave maker for hair exactly my length. I did NOT have the experience demonstrated so gleefully in that video. I'm afraid this will be spending its life in my "sorry I bought this but I'm not gonna throw it away" box.
