HP Printer Cartridge Was "New" But Expired
1 of 1 found this helpful I saw this HP 940XL cartridge for $8.99 advertised as "brand new." Since these types of cartridges are rather expensive on the open market ($29.95 on Amazon) I was skeptical but decided to take a chance for $8.99. The cartridge arrived in the original packing and was unopened so theoretically it was "new." However, the cartridge date was expired. This means that there is a chip in the cartridge that the printer looks for to determine its expiration date. If the printer determines that the cartridge is expired it will not print. This is how HP makes money on cartridge purchases as your are forced to buy current product to ensure machine functionality. You can somehow disable this functionality by going inside the printer but that is kind of ridiculous to mess with. I know this is the case because I had a different unopened cartridge that I knew was expired and it equally failed when installed. So, essentially you cannot "cheap" your way out by trying to buy an unopened cartridge that is expired. It was not a disaster for $8.99 but the reality is that expired "new" cartridges shouldn't be made available since they will not work without jury rigging the printer itself.
