When you need to power a 5V device from a portable, external battery!
This thing will power otherwise stationary items that require 5 volts. The 5.5mm plug means they're thirsty, however, so you will need a big bad battery. At least 10000 mAh. But the big thing here is to have a battery providing two USB ports.
You can then plug this cable into the battery, in both ports at once, using a Y USB cable. Should be cheap to get one - it's made of two USB A male plugs at one end, and one USB A female plug at the other end. Plug this cable into that, and you'll get sufficient power for, let's say, an M8 Android box (be warned, M9 boxes might require a different type of power plug!)

I use it for much more modularity
Perfect for running a "cubieboard" off an external battery, just tried it out using a 10000 mAh power bank. Before this, I had to use mains socket converters, from 120V / 230V to 5V. This will run off pretty much any USB "type A" port (maybe except some old computers) so that makes it much, much more flexible.

Useful!
Still works with a lot of old computers. I'm talking 400 MHz old, possibly even older and slower than that.
