I bought this as ear protection when using my very loud rider mower. It's very effective and good enough to hear audible books. Nothing is going to blank out really loud noises except maybe an insulated space suit helmet, but this works. I'm sure the Boise model is better, but several times as much when I have good regular earphones made no sense. These should work well on an airplane, where noise levels are far lower than with my mower. For $50 on ebay these are a great deal. Quality of materials and controls is good. Sound quality if no really loud background noise is actually not bad, but not what you get from good normal headphones in the $200 plus range/
