Look elsewhere for a fan controller hub; this one needs improvement.
1 of 1 found this helpful Although this was a knob, there were only a few settings. After probing this closer with a multimeter, I found approximately 3 settings besides on and off--approximately11, 9.5, and 6 volts. These steppings in voltage are not equally spaced, and the 9.5 and 6 volts were extremely close to each other on the knob.
It's better and cheaper than individual resistors, but there are better inexpensive fan controller hubs out there.

Cool as a cucumber, but I don't tax my system too much.
There's a good reason this the most purchased cooler on the market. It easily keeps my i7-4790 84w TDP processor cool.
The fan is verrry quiet, but not silent--my fan idles around 1,000 rpm; you can also slow the fan down with resistors on the 12v wire to quiet the fan if the pwm doesn't slow your fan enough.
I don't do any gaming, and I've never done any benchmarks with Prime95 or any other program, but CPUID hardware monitor reports that my processor rarely gets over 40 degrees Celsius. I only use my computer for browsing, watching videos (on a dual 1080p monitor setup with a Nvidia 1030 with 2 GB GDDR5 video card), and other apps that don't tax my system much.
If you need something quieter, get a larger cooler with more heat pipes (6 or 7) and a slower fan. I also have the Cooler Master 612 ver. 2 which is as close to no fan noise as you'll get--that fan idles around 750 rpm on an identical processor (the i7-4970,) and never speeds up.

Intel's i7-4790 is still a very relevant CPU if you have a motherboard for it.
3 of 3 found this helpful The i-4790 is still a very good CPU, but with today's applications, get 32 GBs (unless you only have 2 slots) of DRAM and a good video card.
Do yourself a favor, and get a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO--I also used Arctic Silver instead of the included Cooler Master CPU paste; the cooler and the paste cooled my i7-4970 by about 25 degrees Celsius over stock cooler.
The Cooler Master fan is very adequate, but Noctua fans are quieter.
