A Star Is Born [New DVD] Manufactured On Demand, NTSC Format

Good picture and audio quality
This version of "A Star is Born" is in the public domain so cheap DVDs of it are easy to find. Most will have poor audio and picture due to the film's age. This release is easy to see and hear but it's a truly bare bones release. There isn't even a menu screen, much less subtitle options or special features. I'd recommend it if you want to see the movie but even then, if you're interested at all, you're going to like this classic and will want a better release. Still, it'll do for now.

Great movie, decent picture, so-so subtitles.
It's a terrific parody of Wakt Disney's Fantasia and stands on its own as well. I highly recommend the film for Disney enthusiasts and fans of animation as well. It contains many big laughs and will subvert your expectations more than once. This DVD? it's ok. I didn't expect much in terms of special features so that's fine but the English subtitles have numerous typos and punctuation errors. Whether the original live-action footage was as grainy as it appears here I'm not sure but I'm intended to believe that it was, as the animated segments look quite good. Considering it's a film that's difficult to get a hold of, I say you can't go wrong.

A Fine Selection from Criterion
If you're a collector of Criterion films, this one is an early release so the special features are not as extensive as they are now, and the essay included is similarly short. Nevertheless this is an easily accessible horror/thriller with great performances, including a memorable one by Anthony Hopkins (who is not in the film for very long but makes a lasting impact). Jodie Foster is also notably strong as a woman who struggles to prove herself among the FBI, which is dominated by men. This adaptation of the novel by Thomas Harris stands on its own. It's gripping and frightening, with many iconic scenes and characters.
