A GREAT, GREAT classic album
Patti Scialfa's third solo cd is her best yet, and the one of the best I've ever heard. This has become my favorite cd of all I own. No matter how often you play it,the songs are durable pleasure; there's always something new to enjoy. Scialfa plays a blend of 12 bar blues rock, country, blues, pop, and folk that melds the best of each genre. The music is similar to that of BONNIE RAITT, JOHN MELLENCAMP, Willie Nelson, etc. You hear electric & acoustic guitars, harmonicas, violins, etc. At times her singing voice is as soft, pretty, and soothing as NORAH JONES'; often it has the same world-weary, soulful quality of Bonnie Raitt - these are all reference points, she's copying nobody. Her soft, scratchy voice is sexy & soothing above twangy guitar that reminds me on occassion of early Stones. Several times she samples & weaves motifs from famous 1950s songs into her own. (These are fully credited & notated). All this just works so well. The emotional tone of this cd is relaxing & warm with arty, poetic lyrics with meanings that unfold over various listenings. BEST TRACK: "Looking For Elvis". Instruments glide in, glide out, hang around, or leave, then return, all seemingly at random - but they all work together. All the while, her singing is similarly intricate - soaring, sweeping, soft, then intense; always varied, even within the same sentence. She makes choices with her voice you just don't expect and you wonder how she ever thought to do that...great. CLOSE SECOND BEST: "TOWN CALLED HEARTBREAK" - bouncy, authoritative guitar opened this song, beautifully sung with a folk/pop atmosphere. The other songs are great; each distinct, with some echoing 1960s "Wall of Sound" 50's pop, others strongly country or folk.

More great music, smokey vocals, and solid songwriting.
This edition has a special 3 song disc of live performanes that are every bit as powerful and satisfying as the regular studio CD. A lot of 50s Girl-Group sounds, beautifully updated and integrated with Scialfa's solid work both on guitar and vocals, add a genuine freshness to the disc. The quality of the songs doesn't match Play It As It Lays, but that is a very high standand to meet. The material on this disc is excellent, with Long As I Can Be With You the standout track. If you like Bonnie Raitt, you'll love Patti Scialfa. This CD is available in eBay very cheaply.
