Post-CHICAGO Kander and Ebb
Kander and Ebb are perhaps best known for two blockbuster works, CABARET and CHICAGO, although together they also produced some interesting lesser-known works for Broadway. THE VISIT, based on the Durrenmatt play, was sadly the final work developed before the passing of lyricist Fred Ebb, and it is also one of the last recordings of British actor Roger Rees before his untimely passing. On the plus side, the recording features the always excellent Chita Rivera in the lead role, although her voice is obviously not as strong as it was for earlier K&E shows. The pieces themselves are a mixed bag, with nothing standing out memorably. The quality of the recording itself is good, and listeners will get a good feel for the entire staged work through the liner notes. Recommended for all Broadway collectors.

OK Musical from Hugh Martin
"Make A Wish" did not do spectacular business on Broadway, even with the talents of Nanette Fabray and Helen Gallagher. Indeed, one critic noted that Fabray was much too old for the part of a teenage ingenue, and the highlight of the evening turned out to be the choreography by Gower Champion (the cd includes the dance music, which was not heard on the original lp release). Composer Martin is best known for his work with Judy Garland, especially on the film MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, for which he wrote her hit songs. Unfortunately, his other work never reached those popular heights. A must recording, however, for Broadway collectors and historians.

Lesser kbown JSS work
Gassed is one of Sargent's lesser jbown works but still significant. The book relates the history of the work in detail.
