The Fading Thoughts and Images of an Almost Vanished Scotland
1 of 1 found this helpful An astonishingly honest and unvarnished account of growing up,working, and living as part of the indigenous community in the highlands of Scotland. The book is as close to a written version of an oral tradition as you will ever encounter, it an 'uncorrected' set of traditional memories with more in common with the sort of local folklore that my granny would recount to us over a peat fire on an early frosty autumn evening, vivid and spellbinding, each characters voice speaks to the reader of a world almost totally lost to progressive modernity, and has the refreshing ring of unvarnished truth to it. I found this book hard to put down, it made me smile, grin, laugh, and cry, for I recognized in its pages the half forgotten country I grew up in and the Scottish character I was so familiar with, and loved.

An old friend ...
I read this book as a teenager and it has remained a firm favorite for many years, the themes are universal, the writing is tight and yet fully descriptive, there is a timelessness to the storyline which strikes a chord with those I lent it to and have taken the time to read it. Widely regarded as a modern classic, I cannot recommend 'Hello Summer Goodbye' enough
