Brilliant debut .. NON-Historical, not-really Biblical, ending.
2 of 3 found this helpful Ridley Scott,
What to say?
.. for one thing, to anyone who knows his history, he makes "historical" films that are almost 95% fiction - to anyone who has an even passing knowledge/RESPECT for history - which most people do NOT.
I first became aware of his talent during "gladiator" where he managed to make me feel proud of the Roman army !! (my late mother was Jewish).. The rest of the film I could not watch, for historical reasons (I have the greatest love for/RESPECT of History).
.... because Commodus never killed his father- in fact you can read on the online encyclopedia: "Commodus, was Roman Emperor from 180 to 192. He also ruled as co-emperor with his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 until his father's death in 180". So the whole film is a HUGE lie ... historically.
This film, I expected more of the same.
Well, he did it again:
He made me "feel", he made me "see" the greatness of the Egyptian army - he made me feel I had seen them in action.
I was mesmerized, literally. I have been fascinated by Egyptian History since I was 12. It was a glorious experience to see the beginning of this film.
... the beginning. As for the rest, Historically and Biblically it is tummyrot.
1. Moses had not just one but 2 sons (Guershom and Eliezer)
2. The "thing" about the "Jewish guerilla" and the "hangings" and the rest - is pure fabrication without the slightest basis in History or the Bible.
3. You cannot make a Biblical film and "edit" out G-d.4. You cannot edit the book of Exodus.
4. Rameses II (the Builder) had many children, not just one - by many wives.
5. He was one of the greatest of the Egyptian Pharoes (if not THE greatest) - and not, by any stretch of the imagination, a callous, crude, dummy.
6. Moses was raised in the palace and schooled with the finest teachers, tutors and teaching material in the world. He was undoubtedly a scribe, as part of his education (he is believed by most of us to be the author of the first 5 books of the Bible).
That being said: this film is not as bad as I had expected and is, in fact: a decent effort by (perhaps) a sort-of non-Bible believing "Christian" ... or Agnostic.
EXCEPT for the beginning - which is a work of genius and evidence of a real, a rare, gift.
I recommend you watch this and make up your own mind.
