Classic album
This is the second album by Richard and Linda Thompson and is their best. It’s better produced than their first, but what’s really noticeable is Richard Thompson’s growth as a songwriter, story songs abound here, the Egypt Room (a bordello?), , Smiffy,s Glass Eye, Mole in Hole, Georgie on a Spree, some are weird and all seem to come from a strange parallel universe inside RTs head. I highly recommend this album, neither of the two bettered it either together or as solo artists, 5 stars with no debits for lack of taste, poor songs etc.

80s live on
John Mayer studied music of the 80s for this album and it’s paid dividends, there’s a flavour of Springsteen in the opening track and JJ Cale, Dire Straits and so on. Mayer apparently chose 10 songs at the beginning of the recording process and stuck with them, rather than bringing in new songs and so there’s a completeness of feel and consistency that he hasn’t achieved before, the production (courtesy of Don Was) is excellent, the playing is brilliant and the songs themselves are all good. This album doesn’t have a poor track or a dull moment on it and gets 5 stars from this reviewer as it’s one of 3 essential albums this year, Birdy Young Hearts , and Lord Huron Long Lost are the other two.
