An excellent reference for the period.
I've long been a student of naval history, especially the hows and whys of ship development. I've had a copy of John Campbells 'Naval Weapons of World War Two' as well as his excellent story of British naval weapons in Conway's 'Warship' series. I spent a lot of time wishing he had written a similar book on the weapons of First World War navies. With his passing it began to look like that would never happen. Now it has. The great naval historian Norman Friedman was given access to Mr. Campbell's notes by that gentleman's sister, and coupled with a large amount of first-hand research by himself and others Mr. Friedman has produced a worthy successor to the WW2 volume. 'Naval Weapons of World War One' covers all weapons of the period, starting with shipboard guns and then proceeding to torpedoes, mines and anti-submarine weapons. The layout is different from The WW2 book. That original volume was organized first by country, with the weapons of each nation listed together. Mr. Friedman's work is organized by weapon, with the guns first, subdivided by country. It is a little hard to adjust at first, but once one is used to it, it works quite well. Included in each section is a lengthy explanation of weapons development in general, then there is a good summary of the development of the weapon in question by each nation that used it. Each individual weapon gets a good description of its characteristics and parameters, then a listing of what ships it was used on. Overall I consider this book to be a valuable addition to the library of any naval enthusiast.
Planet Models 1:72 SPAD XI Resin Kit #PLT061

    Nice Kit, But...
I've been looking for a kit of the SPAD XI (SPAD 11) for a long time now, and was overjoyed when I found this one, which is actually over sixteen years old now. The oldest review I could find of the kit was dated 2000. The kit is all resin, with a fine decal sheet. My only complaint is that for the price I had to pay I would at least expect a photo-etched parts sheet. Forty-five dollars seems a bit steep for a handful of resin parts. That said, what's there is very finely done and I'm not unhappy with anything except the price.

    Excellent Movie, Excellent History
I watched this show with interest when it first aired, and I loved it. I had read Theodore Roosevelt's book, and the movie stayed fairly close to the book and the known story. Having Steven Crane and George Randolph Hearst as characters is a nice touch, and Sam Elliot is always great. Best of all is Tome Berenger as Roosevelt. I bought a copy on VHS as soon as it was released, and loaned it to a friend. his comment on returning it was "Where was Tom Berenger?" It took a bit of convincing before he believed me. Berenger is that good in this movie. If you like history and are at all interested in the subject, this movie is money well spent.
