Top name brands - avoid cheap no name junk!

These are reliable. 8GB is a good size for saving a batch of documents, photos, etc. Also for "burning" an ISO file for operating system (Windows 10, Linuxes) installations or live disk (no installation) testing of new versions.

Use these to create 3, 6, 9, even 12 volt power
There are AA battery holders that come in different sizes, typically on, 2, and 4 connected together. By having a batch of these, like the ten I purchased, it is easy to set up an arrangement for various voltages. The most obvious one for me is to have 6 volts. Two of these, holding a total of four AA batteries and connected in series, creates a 6 volt "pack", which works for example in lantern batteries. 6 volt alkaline lantern batteries cost around $12. Sure, such a battery has a much greater amp-hour capacity than the 4 AAs (which might cost $2), but in the new LED lanterns, you don't need the much larger capacity. And you can buy the AAs in bulk; they are useful for all sorts of things. OR, get rechargeable AAs. Conveniently, most AA chargers handle four batteries.

Do you REALLY need a huge screen ?
Yes, yes, some people think they need (want?) a smartphone with a 5, 6, 6.5 inch screen.
I want a phone I can keep in a pocket, even a shirt pocket. No quasi-tablet is very useful for large messages or epistles. The Z-730 is a bit larger than the ZTE, otherwise very similar. EXCEPT that it is a world (four band) phone, works wherever you have GSM service.
If you get a 730 that has been locked to a carrier, you can get it unlocked for about $1. That way, if you travel overseas, you can just substitute the SIM for one that will be much cheaper to use than through roaming charges.
The Z730 allows you to install a micro-SD card, to store media and some applications data. 32GB is a lot of audio and a few videos (movies not recommended - who wants a small screen for that? - but your own videos taken by the camera, or by another "real" camera - great to have). I also used a sound recorder app to record hours of conference sessions.
The Z730 also makes an excellent WiFi device, you can link all your emails, and access various websites, any time that you have WiFi access - these days - almost "everywhere", and that does not incur 3G/4G phone charges, and gives you faster access. I have a bunch of such apps on mine - Simple Radio and Map Factor Navigator stand out. The latter - works with the GPS receiver part, and needs the WiFi connection only to download maps ion advance of where you might go.
Camera is front facing only and OK for casual use, not great but fine for snapshots.
Bluetooth lets you connect the music player to a decent speaker or wireless headphones, and also allows hands-free phone operation.
Battery should be recharged nightly but can last longer if you turn WiFi and bluetooth off.
