A fine dramatic film, recreating an 18th century French royal scandal.
A handsomely produced film version of the notorious "Affair of the Necklace", starring Hilary Swank, Adrien Brodie, Simon Baker, Christopher Walken, Joely Richardson and Jonathan Price in the leading roles. Filmed on location in many scenes, with sumptuous costumes and period settings that recreate the world of pre-Revolutionary Versailles and Paris in the closing years of the French monarchy. Excellent performances, particularly from Jonathan Price as the decadent Cardinal de Rohan, and Joely Richardson as the doomed Queen, Marie Antoinette, make this a dramatically and visually satisfying movie. Very reasonably priced and in pristine condition, it is one of the more historically accurate film versions of a story often over-dramatized in the telling.

nice selection of less frequently heard compositions
I bought this CD for its low price and genre, but was pleased by the unusually fine selection of less frequently heard compositions of the great Viennese waltz composers Johann Strauss I, Johann Struass II and the inimitable Josef Lanner. The only 'standard', "Wiener Blut", was accompanied by some pleasant waltzes, landlers, polkas, galops, a polonaise and even a Stryian country dance - definitely not the standard fare of most Viennese musical recordings. The performances by the "Tanzquartett Wien" were very accomplished and professional, utilizing a dry, crisp tone and making use of original manuscripts and period instrumentation. All in all, a very pleasant and inexpensive selection from the NAXOS "Light Claasics" series, and an excellent supplement to the more familiar collections of Viennese waltz music. Accompanied by extensive notes on the musical background of the period and the composers, along with descriptions of the individual compositions. Highly recommended.

"Powerful performance by an up-and-coming young actor in a complex role"
A subdued but moving account of a young man's coming to terms with his homosexuality. Michael Grant, as the main character James, is exceptional in the role, recounting the character's difficult struggle to meet his perceived obligations to God, his father and to himself. Good supporting cast, including Tom Wopat as James' father and Gregory Harrison as a minister/therapist. Highly recommended!
