Mud, Sweat, and Tears: The Autobiography , Grylls, Bear
    Jan 29, 2020
Not a Literary Classic But An Interesting Read
I am, and was before I ordered this book, a Bear Grylls fan. After reading the book, I have a deeper respect for what he's done in his lifetime. Having made that qualifier, I was a bit disappointed in the book. Part of my less-than-5 rating is a result of the writing style and much of it is due to the editing. Too much of the book was devoted to his childhood, in my opinion. While any autobiography will begin there and include details to provide context, I waded through the early portions hoping that the story would become more captivating. That part could be easily condensed and better written. The chapters are each about four pages long. While that give many convenient stopping points, it takes away from the flow of the story. Once he got into late adolescence and became more directed, the story picks up interest markedly. I was intrigued by his SAS training and the immediate aftermath, as well as his attempt to summit Mt. Everest. A good number of pages are devoted to this part of his life. However, I was again disappointed with the lack of depth after his Everest encounter. He quickly winds up the book without much revealed about Man Vs. Wild, other than to state that it's dangerous and he has a great crew. While I recommend the book for people curious about Bear Grylls, it won't threaten to win any literary prizes. I suggest buying it used (which I did).
