A well laid-out overview of the US Navy
Stephen Howarth, a veteran author of half a dozen historical non-fiction books, gives the reader a solid baseline from which to explore the rise of the United States Navy.
In this, the 1991 First Edition hardcover release, the narrative unfortunately ends just before war was declared by George H. Bush in the First Desert War, thus the exploits of the last naval bombardment by a full Ship of the Line battleship, the mighty USS Missouri, as well as the first modern-style amphibious assault by US Marines is left to be told by other historians.
That aside, the book flows well for the reader.Because there is little room for excessive detail, one might find oneself wishing for more depth to each in each chapter. Nevertheless, much new and interesting aspects of each era of the US Navy can be gleaned in the 562 narrative. Even a well-seasoned reader of Navy history will find this book to be an excellent source for new information.
Howarth offers a unique way of showing the perpetual problems faced by the US Navy(and, for two millenia, all navies) during peace time. His ability to show conclusively how history repeats itself again again, except on the rare occasions when a rare individual bucks the trend, often to the great salvation of both navy and country.
I recommend this book for history and naval buffs of both novice and experienced background. Howarth did a good job in writing a history that leaves one with enough new information to continue the quest for knowledge and understanding that only the past in it's unique way can perhaps prepare America and the West for the future.

These are the right rims for your van!
2 of 2 found this helpful These came with the wire rims, so they hold better than the ones that are all plastic. They look great, and the van looks much more professional and newer. See pics!

Best strings for the money
Don't waste your money on those chinese generic guitar strings. These d'addiro sets are just a little more, and sound so much better. They last a lot longer, too.
