Children Of The Future - Miller, Steve
1 of 1 found this helpful Children Of The Future - by Steve Miller Band. Released early
1968. This first album of Miller's is typical of 1968 rock
music; A mixture of original psychedelic rock compositions, blues music
rearranged by the artists, and packaged with album art that reflects
the era. Although I had only heard the album a couple of times in
the late 60's and early 70's at parties, I thought it was time to
hear it again and own it.
Although none of the songs on this album were anything close to
top chart hits, they are solid examples of psychedelic rock along
with the altered blues tunes of the era. A lot of the
compositions were designed to enhance the chemically altered
frame of mind that the artists assumed the listener was in while
listening to the album. Boz Skaggs composition "Baby's Callin'
Me Home" stands out as one that got some airplay (at least in my
area of the country), that is a nice little ballad.
The album has its share of experimental sound that is either
studio created with instruments, or created with other electronic
means, or raw ambient nature sounds that accompany the tunes.
The original compositions have interesting, if not obscure,
lyrics examining the social problems of the day are typical of
the songs of the era. Couple those facets with the highly altered
guitars, both acoustic and electric, the ample representation of
the synthesizer, electric organ, and harmonica, the editing of
one track into the other with no gaps, and Children Of The Future
is a classic example of the psychedelic era rock and roll.
Children Of The Future is a fine addition to any Steve Miller fan
looking to rediscover the band's roots.

Blade Runner 10th Anniversary Edition VHS
1 of 1 found this helpful Blade Runner has a cult following of it's own that I will not go
into here. There are scores of web-pages that cover the phenomena
in more detail than I could ever hope to do in this limited
venue. Suffice it to say it is high on the list of the top ten
Sci/fi films of all time.
This 10th Anniversary Edition VHS release is actually a domestic
release of the original European release of the film. It is not
rated due to the extra, more violent scenes edited in to it. It
is overall slightly more violent than the Domestic Theatrical
release (out of print and VHS only) or the Director's Cut (VHS
out of print, DVD in
print).
This copy will satisfy those Blade Runner fans who desire to have
a copy of Blade Runner with the original voice over "Phil
Marlowesque" film noire narration of Harrison Ford that is
missing on the DVD release of the Director's cut. Also present
in this version is the "Hollywood Ending" with aerial footage
from "The Shining" spliced in and a long shot of Deckard and Rachael in a
futuristic car on a highway. Not present in this version is the
"Unicorn dream" inserted in the Director's Cut, which some think
point to the possibility that Deckard is a replicant.
For those who thought the voice over of Harrison Ford made the
original film, this will satisfy that longing that was
unfulfilled by the Director's Cut. That is the primary reason I
purchased this version. Being able to find one new in original
shrinkwrap was especially exciting.
It is unfortunate that this version and the earlier domestic
theatrical release are not available in DVD. At one time the
rumor was that a box set of all seven versions or at least five
of the seven) of Blade Runner would be released. However, it
apparently was the dream of the director and not cleared with the
studio before the rumor leaked. Subsequently the project was
killed. Also, it is rumored that Harrison Ford hated the
voiceover the studio had him do for the domestic and European
theatrical release and used his influence to halt DVD release of
either.
Hopefully the studio, the actors, and the director can resolve
all differences that is preventing the release of all versions on
DVD from happening and release them in the future. A box set
would be ideal, but I would also go for individual releases. A
bit more expensive, but when you are a collector, price matters
little.

Best of the Youngbloods CD 1990 (Original 1970 LP)
1 of 1 found this helpful This remastered compilation captures all the original aspects of the fine vintage rock of the Youngbloods, consisting of Jesse Colin Young (vocals, bass), Jerry Corbitt (lead guitar), "Banana" Lowell Levinger (rhythm guitar), and Joe Bauer (drums). The sound quality of the remastered tracks equals or exceeds the orignal vinyl release.
This "Best Of" compilation has their earlier hit "Get Together" along with "Darkness Darkness", Quicksand", and "Sunlight" from the album "Elephant Mountain". None of the other songs on this compilation reached the commercial success of "Get Together", which became an anthem of the peace movement of the late '60's. However all the offerings are solid songs of the era that deserve a second listen for those who passed them by and a first for those who only know of the Youngbloods from "Get Together".
"Darkness Darkness" captured my attention in the early '70's when my first serious romance in high school fell apart after she left for college in another city. As I said above, all the songs have merit and perhaps you will find one that speaks to your soul as I did with "Darkness Darkness".
This is a solid CD from the late '60's American Rock scene deserving a place in any classic rock audiophile's collection.
