NEW! Logitech Harmony Home Hub - Smartphone Control Entertainment (915-000238)
    Jan 04, 2017
Well-designed, Works well, but makes assumptions
The Logitech Harmony Hub is a good product that with the right situation will install smoothly and work flawlessly. "with the right situation" is key though. The hub must be installed in a well-designed, properly wired TV setup, entertainment center, home control system, etc. My -problem was that I had an entertainment center like those in a lot of houses where I had added on equipment every year or two and just did enough to get it working. Then another, then another. When I began to try to install the Harmony Hub, I think the list of devices included a Samsung TV, a Sony BluRay recorder/player, a SlingBox, a TiVo DVR, an Integra Receiver/control system and an Xbox 360. Along with all these devices, I needed a remote control receiver/distribution setup, an ethernet switch and multiple speakers spread out in the walls. Harmony Hub never had a chance because most of these devices were added on later in a messy sort of way. Behind the TV was a rat's nest of wiring that meant it was difficult to track a wire all the way from one device to the next. What I had to do to set up a system Harmony Hub could handle was remove: Xbox, SlingBox and one set of speakers. I hadn't used any of these for a couple years at least. Then I had to remove all the wires, I mean ALL THE WIRES!! Then starting over from scratch, I rewired the whole system in an orderly way, routing everything through the Integra control system/receiver. I ended up with a pile of useless cables, a pile of excess cables and a much cleaner area behind the TV. Once I did all that, the Harmony Hub worked simply, easily and effectively. So as long as the system you are trying to automate with a single remote is properly designed, simply wired and well understood, the Harmony Hub is Great! Just don't try to use it to fix that rat's nest of wires hiding behind your TV.
