Necessary for all flat-nosed lever action bullets.
If you use a lever action rifle where your bullets are stacked in a tube as opposed to a magazine, there will always be pressure on the bullet from recoil and the weight of the other bullets. Crimping tightens things up between the bullet and the case to avoid any slipping of the bullet further into the case.
