Great, but not excellent.
2 of 2 found this helpful I bought this camera because I wanted to upgrade from my 6 year old Sony 3.5megapixel camera before a trip to the Caribbean. I wanted something that was rugged that I wouldn't have to worry about getting wet. This camera accomplishes these criteria.
Pros - Easy to use – 5X optical zoom - The camera turns on and is ready to take pictures very quickly. - It's rugged and will withstand a sizable drop. - The LCD display is bright and clear, even in bright sunshine. – The daylight modes, flash photography and macro picture resolution and quality is superb! - The Macro LED's and Macro focus is unbelievable! - Once I got used to the menus, modes changes are easily selectable. - Nice size camera. Not too small, but small enough to slip into a pocket. - I also liked the included heavy duty clip/strap that easily hooked to my belt loop.
Cons - The door seals and latches are wimpy and didn't want to trust submerging the camera for more than a second or two. - The camera design does not allow for a lens cover so it was susceptible to smudges while hanging on belt or in a pocket when not in use - Low light pictures... I haven't found the trick to shooting low light picture. Even with a tripod the picture quality seems grainy. - The panorama and wide modes were undependable and was hit or miss to get a good result.
I do recommend this camera... overall its a very nice camera and I do not regret my purchase. My fears of underwater use stems from the reviews that I've read before my purchase and my observation of the door seal construction and doors remaining latched. The problem is that a great deal of extra care is needed to make sure that there is no dust particles reside in the seal and the door latches properly to keep it waterproof – This is no small task if you are in a hurry, or changing the battery outdoors. On my trip the camera continued to function properly after it was doused with a cran-rasberry soda, splashed at the pool and beach, and was soaked when caught in the the rain. I also submerged it in a pool for a few seconds at a time... so I would deem the camera is dependable for these conditions but still didn't want to take a chance and truly use it underwater while snorkeling.
One other note... the large-bright display comes at a cost... Battery life! Buy an extra battery or two because it depletes them somewhat quickly. I was averaging two batteries a day. Not a real big deal but that whole dust in the door problem again becomes the issue.
I truly feel that this would be a great camera if Pentax would refine the door seals, make a more positive latch mechanism and add a external lens cap.
