You need the magnetic ring to attach to ...

You need the magnetic ring to attach to the phone to make the magnetic ball hold the phone. This was only the ball. The ring apparently is sold separately. It has strong adhesive, clean modern look, no easily-broken plastic pieces. Not recommended for vehicles that have high temperatures in the cabin like in the summer, according to the instructions, likely due to weakening of the adhesive over time. So, the user needs to avoid hot temperatures in the car. Replacement adhesive is available.
