LG DP542H HD DVD player Multi Region Multi Format USB HDMI FREE HDMI cable NEW
Feb 28, 2019
Let down by short mains cable
I've deliberately removed 2 stars from this product because it is fitted with a hard-wired mains cable which is barely ONE metre long! Consequently, unless you want to place it in on the floor, near to your mains sockets, you cannot use this on top of a Hi-Fi stand or other piece of furniture! The other star has been deducted because the mains lead is NOT DETACHABLE, meaning that you cannot pass the cable through the back of a conventional piece of furniture, which has a slot or small round hole cut out for cables to be routed behind the unit. LG are basically cutting corners to save a few pence on the finished product. How much would an additional metre of 2 core cable cost to a huge manufacturer like LG? Probably less than 2p. Note also that there is NO OPTICAL AUDIO OUTPUT and only one HDMI socket. Apart from the cons, the product is useful being a multi-region player and the upscaling provided means that original DVD's made in the 80's/90's and 2000's can be viewed with much better definition on today's large screen monitors. Good value for the price paid - but LG should review their policy on the uselessly short power cable!

CYP AU-D3-192 Audience Digital Audio Converter DAC Optical Coaxial RCA Stereo
Jan 17, 2019
Inexpensive way to convert Digital Audio to Analogue signals
If like many people, you still have a conventional (analogue) audio amplifier, opposed to modern equipment, such as Sky's Q boxes and most flat screen TV's which only have an Optical audio output. Very few analogue audio amps have an optical input, so you have to convert the signal from digital to analogue using devices like this DAC. This particular model has a sampling rate of up to 192 kHz which is far better than the 48 kHz sampling rate offered by the Sky Q box and many DVD and Blu Ray players. So all you need is this small device, (which is supplied with a 3 pin adaptor plug to step down the mains to 5 Volts) plus a TOSlink fibre cable and a twin (L&R) coaxial/phono plugged cable to connect everything together. It's very easy to set up. There's a small switch on the DAC to select either Optical or Coaxial input (you can't select both) and a red LED to show which one is selected. If you are connecting to a Sky Q box, then select Optical input and connect the output coaxial/phono plugs into your amplifier Auxiliary input. Result - fantastic stereo sound (I used a pair of bass-reflex bookshelf speakers) instead of the usual awfully tinny sound produced by nearly all flat screen TV internal speakers. Fair enough, you don't get Dolby 5.1 or 7.1 output but for most programs these days, a good beefy stereo sound is more than adequate, and costs a fraction of what you would pay for a Soundbar or a new amp with an optical input. Thoroughly recommended!
Set of 4 Reversible Over Door Hook, New Style, Stainless Steel

Good value, strong hooks
I bought these to hang Christmas wreaths and other decorations on the top of interior and exterior doors and they are perfect for this job. Unlike many of the much longer door hooks sold around this time of year, the overhang on the outside edge does not cover up your house number (assuming that this is located very near the top of your front door like mine). The overhang lip is only around 10mm whereas most of the longer door hooks overhang by 20 to 30mm. The L shaped drop from top of door is 70mm whereas larger door hooks have a 200 to 300mm drop so these are good for holding items near the top of your doors rather than half-way down. I can't say how good the stainless steel is yet as I've only just started using one outside but being stainless will definitely be an advantage to prevent any future rust. Priced at £2.89 for 4 is very good value since most of the longer hooks sold in high street shops cost around £2 to £2.75 each.
