Essential shop tool.
It's super handy for weighing bikes and parts especially in choosing which tires and wheels should go on a bike.

Nostalgia of a renegade.
Glotzer subtitles this "Memoir and Critique". Only the former has any value. His personal accounts of being a member of the American Trotskyist movement in the '30s offer some insight into the milieu of the anti-Stalinist Left and esp. the work of the Dewey Commission. The "Critique" portion is the same old Social-Democratic garbage that Leninism leads to Stalinism [in related news dinosaurs lead to asteroid impacts], etc. I can't pinpoint the exact moment Glotzer lost both his spine and the ability to think critically but i'm sure more discerning readers will. If nothing else the book illustrates the corrosive influence liberal public opinion can have on ostensibly Marxist intellectuals. But you get a sense that ultimately his disenchantment w/ revolutionary politics has to do w/ the failure of the Trotskyists to fundamentally impact the course of history after Stalin's counter revolution in the USSR. If Trotsky had been successful one gets the impression that Glotzer [and many others] would have forgiven him crimes equal to Stalin's, if only he'd held power. In today's regressive political climate Bernie Sanders can pass himself off as a "socialist", Glotzer records a time when authentic socialism stood as a real pole of attraction to class conscious workers and youth and actually made the sleep of the Bourgeoisie uneasy.

Richard Ballantine's Legacy.
1 of 1 found this helpful I first read this book when it appeared in paperback in 1972. Looking back after over 40 years i can see how it shaped my sensibilities not just with regard to bicycles but life generally. For a teenager in the midst of the bike boon Richard Ballantine was the seasoned mentor generously sharing his wisdom and experience. The book was encyclopedic w/out being dense or off putting. Illustrations [by John Batchelor] were beautiful and precise. There were occasional errors or odd nomenclature but the overall clarity was such that these did not lead to confusion. Richard was enthralled with how humane of a machine the bicycle is, with all the ways it can enrich and even transform one's life. Living in those times he understood that the only way to achieve something was to fight for it and that passion comes through. Over the decades i've given away dozens of copies of this book to young cyclists. I still think it's the best introduction to cycling out there. The sections on repair and maintenance still stand up even though there have been some serious changes in technology. If you have this book under your belt you will not be dismayed by the new stuff. This was probably the second bike manual i ever owned [after Tom Cuthbertson's "Anybody's Bike Book" also recommended]] and it spoiled me for the many poorly written, spiritless volumes i would subsequently acquire. If you're a "cyclist" and not just someone who rides a bike this should be the first book in your library. And no harm if it's the only one.
