Sony STR-DG1000 review
I looked for several months to find a receiver that had pre-outs and was less than a thousand dollars. Even though the STR-DG1000 retails for around 900, I found it for 430 after shipping after about 4 months of searching. This is an excellent system, not only does it have the pre-outs that I needed to amplify my Polk RTI-12s, it supplies sufficient power (120w/channel) to my surrounding speakers (Polk M-40s) and center channel (Polk CS-2). The receiver doesn't run hot, even after prolonged use at high volume. It is very user-friendly and has many bonuses (such as the microphone to tune your speakers for optimal performance). It will also upconvert DVD's to high definition (1080i). I would imagine that most people who need a receiver like this would be watching blu-ray instead of DVDs though. This receiver is comparable to the Onkyo TX-SR805 (my second choice) and I purchased it for less than half of the retail of that unit as well. If your system requires a lot of power, this is a very good receiver to use. I would even go so far as to say that if you only need 100-120 watts per channel, pick this one up; it's worth a couple hundred extra dollars to have all the options. Just wait for a good deal and pick it up, I saw mine brand new, buy it now on Ebay for 399$ plus 29$ shipping. The most important thing is to know your system requirements before you buy a receiver, so make sure to do your homework on all of your components before purchasing. There is no downside that I have seen so far with this unit, unless you consider size an issue. It is quite large, check the dimensions on it if you need something smaller.
